The Black Legacy Fund is a Grand Rapids Community Foundation initiative. Led by community volunteers, the Black Legacy Fund continues to build on the legacy of giving within the Black communities in the Grand Rapids area.

20% of all proceeds will be donated to the Black Legacy Fund.

Carter G. Woodson, known as the "Father of Black History", co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) to encourage scholars to engage in the study of the African American past.

In 1926, he started Negro History Week to honor the legacy of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, both born in February. Decades later, Woodson and the ASNLH sought to expand this week into a larger celebration of African American history and accomplishments.

In 1976, fifty years after its first celebration, Negro History Week officially transformed into the Black History Month we know and celebrate today.
