The youngest Nobel Prize laureate, Malala Yousafzai, had a huge impact in her native Swat Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northwest Pakistan, where the local Taliban had banned girls from attending school. She is a fierce advocate for the education of women and children and drew international attention to her cause.
On October 9, 2012, fifteen-year-old Malala and two other girls were shot by a Taliban gunman as part of an assassination attempt in retaliation for her activism. Malala was hit in the head with a bullet but miraculously survived. The attempt on her life sparked an international outpouring of support not only for her recovery but for the work she was doing in the realm of education for girls and women.
